While pregnant women are often told they are “glowing,” this summer, we want to ensure that the preggy glow is from your fabulous skin, too. Our skin, when pregnant, often tells a different story. I’m sure you don’t have to be told that these changes can be more pronounced during the summer months, leading to concerns such as hyperpigmentation, increased sensitivity, and dehydration. So, with that said, what can you do to ensure you take care of your skin over the next few heat-induced months?
Prioritise Sun Protection
Our intense sun on this side of the equator can exacerbate skin issues like melasma, commonly known as the “mask of pregnancy.” These are the dark patches on the face. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is vital to prevent this. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are considered safe during pregnancy.
In addition to sunscreen, wearing wide-brimmed hats and protective clothing can shield your skin from harmful UV rays. These items provide physical barriers against the sun’s rays, reducing direct exposure to your skin. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors.
Water Yourself Regularly
When the heat levels rise, it can be a real sweat fest, and this can lead to dehydration. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain skin elasticity and overall health. Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily. Incorporate hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges into your diet to boost hydration levels.
Use Gentle Cleansers
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase oil production, leading to breakouts. A gentle, sulfate-free cleanser can help manage this without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
Address Hyperpigmentation Safely
To manage melasma, incorporate products containing vitamin C, niacinamide, or azelaic acid, which are considered safe during pregnancy. These ingredients can help brighten the skin and reduce pigmentation. However, always consult a dermatologist before introducing new products into your skincare routine.
Moisturise Regularly
Keeping your skin moisturised is essential to prevent dryness and maintain its barrier function. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturisers to minimise the risk of irritation. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides (and just like that, we’re back in science class) are beneficial for maintaining hydration.
Avoid Harmful Ingredients
Certain skincare ingredients should be avoided during pregnancy due to potential risks. These include retinoids, salicylic acid, and hydroquinone. Always read product labels carefully and consult a healthcare provider if you need clarification on a product’s safety.
“Cool for the Summer”
Heat can exacerbate skin issues during pregnancy. Wearing loose, breathable clothing and staying in shaded or air-conditioned areas can help keep your skin cool. A soothing mist or thermal water spray can provide instant relief and hydration.
Looking after your skin when pregnant doesn’t have to be a major complication – with a new baby on the way, you have more than enough on your plate. Using the above guide is simple and will put your mind at ease while maintaining healthy, glowing skin all summer.ย ย
