Building a Happy Haven: Family Wellness

by | Jun 6, 2024

Weโ€™ve said it countless times before and will say it again. Raising kids is an incredible adventure, but let’s be honest, it can also be exhausting! Between sleepless nights, endless nappy changes, and the constant energy of your tiny explorer, prioritising family well-being can feel impossible. However, the good news is that building a happy and healthy family environment is achievable, even with busy schedules.

Communication: Building a Safe Space

The foundation of family wellness starts with open communication. Even with little ones, create opportunities for them to express their feelings, even if it’s through babbles, gestures, and facial expressions. Talk to them about their day, sing silly songs together, and narrate what you’re doing when they’re with you. Yes, it takes a little more effort after a day of work, but it will be worth it. This constant back-and-forth builds a safe space where they feel comfortable expressing themselves freely.

Growing Together: Playful Activities and Routines

Our little ones thrive on routine and play! Incorporate healthy habits into your daily routine, especially if your little ones haven’t started at Nursery School yet. Get your housekeeper or nanny involved. Start with a consistent sleep schedule, creating a calming bedtime ritual with baths, soothing songs, and cuddles. Mealtimes can be a fun bonding experience. Let your little one “help” prepare meals (age-appropriately) and encourage them to try new healthy foods.

What to Eat: Fueling Tiny Bodies and Big Adventures

Focus on offering a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables. Cut them into fun shapes or involve your child in picking them out at the store. Sneak in some greens by blending spinach or kale into smoothies. Introduce whole grains like oatmeal for breakfast or brown rice with dinner. Remember healthy fats! Avocado slices, nut butter (check for allergies first), and full-fat yoghurt provide essential nutrients for growing bodies.

Physical Activity is Key

Schedule daily playtime, whether it’s a walk around the complex, a dance party in the living room, or crawling adventures exploring the house. These activities not only strengthen our bodies but also create precious memories and laughter.

Mindful Moments: Calming Techniques and Connection

Even little ones experience emotions like frustration, sadness, and anxiety. Teach them simple calming techniques like deep breathing exercises or singing calming songs. Practice mindfulness together by taking a few minutes to appreciate the sights and sounds around you. Remember, they will mirror what you do, so mom and dad, ensure you’re setting the example.

Finding Strength in Your Village

Building a solid social circle isn’t just for adults! Connect with other parents at playgrounds, mommy and me groups, or playdates. You will find support and friendship, and your little one will benefit from social interaction with other children.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Even small changes, like a family dance party after dinner or a relaxing bath routine, can make a big difference. There will be messy moments, sleep regressions, and tantrums (and the little ones might have these, too) but keep setting the foundation for family wellness that will serve you all in future.
