Born out of a love for supporting local at markets, maker and creator Carin Archibald started her proudly South African baby brand of pretty but functional ‘momssentials’, Button & Bear, after noticing a gap in the market for locally made products that she could only find commercially. It wasn’t long after her mom started making items for her daughter that Carin’s friends and even strangers started asking where she found them. A few baby shower gifts made for friends and friends-of-friends later, the idea behind Button & Bear was born.

With every product in her range conceptualised from her own mom experience: whether it is from the ease-of-use, the choice of fabric, the versatility, and the desire to have designs that are both aesthetic and functional, Carin’s range of stylish yet practical essentials include:

  • The Messy Baby Bib – a plastic coated, wipe-clean bib for fuss-free first foods exploration through to toddler ‘feeding-myself’ mastery.
  • The Burp Cloth – comfort shaped 100% cotton with a soft absorbent towelling lining. This is a nappy bag and feeding essential.

The latest Button & Bear range is locally printed on 100% cotton in Cape Town and then manufactured by a small CMT in Soweto. Carin’s philosophy has remained true to local sourcing and manufacture with the aim of creating opportunities in needy communities and collaborating with other small businesses.

“I want my girls to grow up in a world where they feel empowered and believe that anything is possible if you put the hard work in, that any dream is attainable. I want to be that role-model for them, one of the women they look towards as an authentic example of a learning and growth philosophy, to never be satisfied with the status quo,” says the Sandton based entrepreneur.
