You’ve heard the saying that everything is possible if you believe it, I’ve learnt that everything is possible if you allow it. Being a working mom; running a household, following a life’s passion and being available to your children and husband every step of the way is all possible – I’m testimony to that.

As a mother of three children under the age of seven with a high-powered career in Public Relations and a part-time dancer, I recently sat at my eldest daughter’s Parent’s Information Evening thinking to myself – is this it? Do I need to stop working for my children to feel that I’m not an absent mom through their journey of learning and discovering the world? Do I want to be that mom that can never make cricket matches or that misses every school concert because of working commitments?

Here’s my little lady taking that first step into what she calls “big school” (Grade 1) and if the weeks leading up to the first day of school were crazy; from uniform selection, to stationery shopping, books and everything in between, what will the rest of her school career be like – not mentioning my two other children that still need to start “big school”? I’ve heard many parents say that they feel like it’s back to school all over again for them, only 10 times more demanding, and I must admit that I never really took heed of any of those comments. Today I feel the same.  I still have a long way to go with only the first one starting Grade1.

I did feel a bit overwhelmed and a little down for about a day, but I was back to my old self, feeling that it is all possible. Look, I have been doing it. Through everything else, I’ve never missed any of their big moments and don’t intend to start now. I will continue to do everything my heart desires with my children and husband right by my side never missing a single moment. I will continue to dance, have ladies’ nights, travel the word, be an amazing wife and daughter and an even better mother because I’m teaching my children to live life to the fullest.

Why is it possible?

Because I’m not doing it alone. And that’s the secret, I have my village to help me raise my children and allow me to have a life of my own. With an amazing husband to add balance to my life, a mother, mother-in-law, sisters, and even brothers that are always there when I need them, a wonderful nanny and remarkable teachers, I feel like I can conquer the world and be a present mom at the same time. We may all have our own agendas, but what matters is that they all love my kids and that’s what makes it all possible. Who knows, I may even consider having another child… Ok maybe that’s pushing it.

But what I’m trying to say is that there is always help around if you are willing to accept it. As mothers, we need to sometimes accept that we can’t be or do everything for our children all the time and that it’s not always a bad thing. I am a true reflection of the saying “it takes a village to raise a child.”
